Over verschuivende blinde vlekken en de dilemma’s van linkse politiek in een postkoloniaal tijdperk

‘Mijn beide ouders stammen uit een schippersgeslacht’. Met die enigszins onverwachte woorden start Jan Bremans ‘ten geleide’ bij zijn recente bundeling essays, uitgegeven onder de titel ‘Kolonialisme en Racisme’. Eerder dan een introductie van een duidelijk wetenschappelijk programma of een analytische inleiding op zijn werk, leest de 'ten geleide' als een intieme familiegeschiedenis, die Jan helpt zichzelf sociologisch te situeren in de inmiddels steeds diverser wordende Nederlandse samenleving. Die keuze getuigt van een sterk bewustzijn van de invloed van de eigen levensloop en ervaringen op de blik waarmee onderzoekers naar de wereld kijken. We kunnen, stelt Jan, subjectieve elementen waaronder ‘de herkomst en de klasse’ van sociale wetenschappers niet wegdenken wanneer we hun wetenschappelijke relaas proberen te begrijpen.
