In this article I consider the complex relationship between the temperance movement and urban space by shedding light on the impact of the social space of Antwerp and the control and regulation of alcohol and drunkenness. I argue that during the period 1885-1914, there was an attempt to reshape the urban space of Antwerp according to a moral temperance agenda. The subsequent attempt at neutralization and moralization of public space was not a straightforward process but was heavily influenced in its practice by the social production of space, as described by Henri Lefebvre. I look at the spatial logics of the regulation of drunkenness, the reflection of the temperance discourse in police practice and finally the response of the people of Antwerp to the regulation.
