Abstract

The deluge of books on the Second World War

Since it is impossible to discuss all recently published books, studies and articles about the Second World War, this review article to highlights a number of specific developments, and discusses new perspectives. The main topics are the increasing emphasis in historiography on phenomena such as mass violence and its causes, the nature of the Third Reich, and, above all, the Holocaust.

Author Biography

Martijn Lak, The Hague University of Applied Sciences/Erasmus University Rotterdam

Dr. Martijn Lak (1977) studeerde journalistiek aan de Hogeschool Utrecht en geschiedenis aan de Universiteit Utrecht. In 2011 promoveerde hij aan de Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam (EUR) op een proefschrift over de Duitse-Nederlandse economische en politieke betrekkingen tussen 1945 en 1957. In 2015 verscheen van dit proefschrift een publiekseditie. Lak doceert European Studies aan The Hague University of Applied Sciences en geschiedenis aan de Erasmus School of History, Culture and Communication. Zijn onderzoek richt zich op de naoorlogse Duits-Nederlandse betrekkingen, moderne Duitse geschiedenis, de Tweede Wereldoorlog en de vroege fase van de Europese integratie. Hij is de auteur van meerdere boeken en schreef hoofdstukken in verschillende internationale bundels. Daarnaast publiceert hij regelmatig in internationale- en nationale vakbladen, en is hij editor-in-chief van The Journal of Slavic Military Studies en corresponding member van The Journal of Military History.
